The Xocolatl Story

As a social enterprise, the mission of Xokolatl Café is to benefit the children of Semillas Community Schools by organizing a venue for community self-reliance, cultural regeneration and community building. Xokolatl Café specializes in delicious chocolate drinks made with indigenous cacao, an ancient seed cultivated for at least three millennia by Indigenous Peoples.

Xokolatl Café is a community center and a culinary experience like no other in Los Angeles. Offering a menu of traditional Mexican indigenous chocolate drinks in addition to espresso drinks and teas, Xokolatl Café gives birth to an entirely new concept that is culturally based and appealing to the health conscious, energy-seeking market…the concept of being "Xocolicious". Xocoliciousness is about seeking harmony, health and humor in life through culture and community.

Xokolatl Café not only offers the staple espresso drinks we crave, but builds a unique identity around organically grown, indigenous cacao-based drinks.

Cacoa seed

What does Xokolatl mean? Derived from a seed called cacao, or cacahuatl in the native language Nahuatl from Mexico, "xocolatl" is the Nahuatl word for chocolate. Chocolate, in its indigenous form, is a natural high, a healthy energy drink, and a profoundly important cultural beverage. Like green tea, the energy coffee-drinkers seek is reportedly distinct, stronger and healthier in traditionally grown and brewed cacao.

Xokolatl Café is a place to learn about indigenous culture and a stimulating international intellectual space. When a patron enters Xokolatl Café they can select from more than just a latte, breve or espresso - they'll find a Xocolicious place to be. Beyond free wifi access, art exhibits, film nights, poetry nights and current issues nights regenerate the community discourse and invite a broad cross-section of urban L.A. into a space of free-flowing ideas and edgy creativity. Xokolatl Café is an international space founded to support the young and keep the old young at heart.

Xokolatl Café brews only indigenous roasted and raw chocolate. Menu items featuring cacao include ancestral recipes, family secrets and modern variations derived from Aztec and Mayan cultures.

Xokolatl Café was founded upon the culture, tradition, community and wellness generated by Semillas Community Schools and started with the support of the Cal State Federal Credit Union and the guidance of Antigua Cultural Coffeehouse.
